FORT SMITH, Ark. — Chaffee Crossing Historic District will host a special evening of history and storytelling, “From Saigon to Fort Chaffee: Untold Stories From Operation New Arrivals,” on Friday, September 4, 2026, at 6:00 p.m. at the Chaffee Crossing Media Center, 7801 Ellis St., Fort Smith.

The program will feature Doug M. Nguyen, who was a child when his family fled Vietnam in April 1975 and arrived at Fort Chaffee as refugees during Operation New Arrivals. Nguyen grew up in Fort Smith and will share his firsthand story of his family's journey from Saigon to Fort Chaffee and the experiences that shaped his life. Nguyen retired from the U.S. Social Security Administration in 2025 following a 31-year federal career in public affairs. He has also spent many years working with refugee communities and organizations involved in refugee resettlement.

The evening will also feature a special film by Natalie Vuong, a University of Houston student, highlighting the experiences and history surrounding Operation New Arrivals. Operation New Arrivals was a significant chapter in Fort Chaffee's history, as the former military installation served as a processing and resettlement center for thousands of Vietnamese refugees following the fall of Saigon in 1975.

“We are honored to have Doug share his personal story and connection to Fort Chaffee, and to have Natalie share her family’s story through her film,” said Jennifer Seaton-Rambo, Director of Historic District and Museum at Chaffee Crossing. “These personal stories help us connect the history of Fort Chaffee to the people and families who experienced it firsthand. We hope this evening gives our community an opportunity to listen, learn and better understand this important chapter in our history.”

The program will take place Friday, September 4, at 6:00 p.m. at the Chaffee Crossing Media Center. Admission is a $5 donation at the door.
