American History | Learn How Fort Smith Impacted U.S. History

Fort Smith stands as a living chronicle of U.S. history, with many historic sites that showcase its pivotal role in shaping the nation. First founded in 1817 as a military outpost, it became a crossroads of westward expansion, law enforcement, and frontier justice.

The Fort Smith National Historic Site is a must see on your visit to Fort Smith, where you’ll witness the remains of two frontier forts and the infamous Federal Court of the infamous “Hanging Judge,” Isaac C. Parker. Don’t miss the reconstructed gallows used by the federal court for hangings.

In the Old West, Fort Smith was the last area of land before entering Indian Territory, and it was a major stop along the Trail of Tears, when Native Americans were removed by federal law. This somber piece of history is memorialized in thoughtful exhibits at the Fort Smith National Historic Site, including a trail that leads to the Arkansas River with an overlook; part of the original route.

Another must see for history buffs while visiting Fort Smith—the 53,000 sq ft United States Marshals Museum (USMM) memorializes fallen marshals and celebrates over 200 years of U.S. Marshals service history through interactive exhibits, artifacts, and a Hall of Honor. Shaped like a star, the iconic museum building is designed around the five-point star of the Marshals’ badge. The USMM opened in July 2023 and also features an atrium, cafè, and a gift shop.

From historic jails to fascinating museums with artifacts you won’t see anywhere else, there’s so much more to experience here. Come see Fort Smith’s history firsthand and experience the grit and resilience of America’s old frontier spirit for yourself!
