In the Old West, Fort Smith was the last area of land before entering Indian Territory, and it was a major stop along the Trail of Tears, when Native Americans were removed by federal law. This somber piece of history is memorialized in thoughtful exhibits at the Fort Smith National Historic Site, including a trail that leads to the Arkansas River with an overlook; part of the original route.
Another must see for history buffs while visiting Fort Smith—the 53,000 sq ft United States Marshals Museum (USMM) memorializes fallen marshals and celebrates over 200 years of U.S. Marshals service history through interactive exhibits, artifacts, and a Hall of Honor. Shaped like a star, the iconic museum building is designed around the five-point star of the Marshals’ badge. The USMM opened in July 2023 and also features an atrium, cafè, and a gift shop.
